The UNESCO team in Mosul welcomed the visit of the SRSG, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, to the remains of the Al Nouri Mosque and Al Hadba Minaret, both of which UNESCO will rebuild from 2020 onwards. The tour included information on the consultative process to be followed for the design of the Mosque and Minaret, involving community representatives, the Ministry of Culture and the Sunni Endowment.

The Team also explained the delicate approach required to clear the remaining areas of the Complex still polluted by battlefield detritus and UXOs, which the governmental authorities will clear in the near future.

UNESCO explained the wider implications of the programme which involves rehabilitation of the historic urban fabric of Mosul, including houses of historic character, churches, mosques, schools and other public buildings. Moreover, within the framework of the Revive the Spirit of Mosul Initiative, UNESCO seeks to promote reconciliation and a return to normalcy by supporting programmes in education and which focus on the cultural life of the city.

UNESCOs programme is supported by the Governments of the UAE, the EU, Germany, Japan, Flanders and others.
