UNESCO Kabul Office with the support of the Government of Japan will launch a Livelihood, Resilience and Heritage Project to rehabilitate the traditional water management systems in Southern Afghanistan.

Through the restoration and rehabilitation of 10 Karez in Helmand and Kandahar Provinces, the project aims at supporting disaster-resilient infrastructure and nature-based solutions at the community level with a view to addressing water scarcity, as well as rural development, agriculture and natural resource management.  The initiative also addresses the needs of impoverished communities and improving livelihoods through short-term job opportunities, cash for work opportunities and enhances social cohesion.
