The United Nations Partnership on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNPRPD) is bringing its technical assistance to Zimbabwe’s Department of Disability Affairs under the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, to support the Zimbabwe National Statistical Agency (ZIMSTAT) train its staff to strengthen disability-data collection during the upcoming Zimbabwe National Census 2022.

The virtual training workshop takes place from 13-14 July 2021. Article 31 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) stresses on the need for State Parties to collect appropriate disability statistics and data to assist in/assess the implementation of the Convention. 

The main objective of this online training is to build the technical capacities of ZIMSTAT Staff, the drafting team and Technical Officers who will in turn train enumerators, to ensure strengthened collection of disability disaggregated data in the upcoming 2022 National Census rollout. 

Governments and Development Partners have a role to play in promoting an inclusive SDG Agenda and significant strides have been made globally in strengthening disability-data in national censuses and surveys by using the global Washington Group (WG) on Disability Statistics. These Tools are used for disability identification in quantitative data and assist in producing comparable international data.

 This initiative is implemented within the framework of the Zimbabwe United Nations Partnership on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNPRPD) Project, implemented by UNESCO (Lead Agency), UNFPA and UNDP.

Strengthening disability data collection and usage in Zimbabwe is essential as it is one of the key preconditions for an effective implementation of the new National Disability Policy that Zimbabwe recently adopted, and launched by the President in June 2021. 

The Centre for Inclusive Policy (CIP) will deliver the training workshop.
