Upholding Press Freedom Amidst Conflict in Sudan

UNESCO expresses its heartfelt condolences to the families of the four journalists who were killed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, targeted amidst the conflict in Sudan. The organization remains committed to supporting media professionals and upholding press freedom, especially in conflict zones.
UNESCO is deeply concerned about the ongoing killings of journalists who either remained in Khartoum or fled to safer locations, only to be assassinated by the RSF militia. UNESCO Director General Ms. Audrey Azoulay has condemned the deaths of two Sudanese journalists: Khaled Balal in March 2024, and Halima Idris Salim in October 2023. UNESCO continues to address various attacks on journalists and the dire situations that have led to the deaths of over 20 media workers.
Emphasizing the critical role of free and independent media in documenting and reporting on conflicts, UNESCO notes that the targeting of journalists is not only a violation of their personal rights but also an assault on the freedom of press and the public’s right to be informed about the events unfolding in Sudan.
The situation for journalists in Sudan has become increasingly dire since the outbreak of war in April 2023. The RSF militia and other warring factions have specifically targeted journalists, severely restricting their ability to report on the conflict. As a result, many journalists have been forced to flee the country, often leaving behind their belongings and risking their lives in search of safety. Some have successfully reached safer regions or neighboring countries, while others have faced significant barriers to finding refuge.
The targeting of journalists has a chilling effect on the flow of information, making it increasingly difficult for the world to understand the full extent of the conflict and its impact on the civilian population.
UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building, and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
