Welterweight boxing champion Serik Sapiyev becomes UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Sport

UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova will appoint Kazakh boxing champion Serik Sapiyev as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Sport for 2013-2015, in a ceremony that will take place in Astana (Kazakhstan) on 24 August.
The 2012 Olympic Gold medallist is being nominated in recognition of his commitment to promoting education and sport programmes for young people in Kazakhstan, his charitable activities, and his dedication to the ideals and aims of the UNESCO.
In his capacity as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Sport, Serik Sapiyev will support UNESCO’s activities promoting the values of education and sports, with a focus on projects and activities concerning young people and heritage, the environment, and HIV/AIDS.
Sapiyev is the 2012 Olympic welterweight gold medallist. He also won gold medals in prestigious international competitions in Mianyang City (China, 2005); Zhuhai (China, 2009); Guangzhou (China, 2010); and Chicago (USA, 2007).
As a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, Serik Sapiyev will join the ranks of outstanding celebrity advocates who spread the ideals of UNESCO through their name and fame, and draw attention to UNESCO’s work.
