World Radio Day is marked in Paris
UNESCO Deputy Director-General, Getachew Engida, addressed a celebration of World Radio Day at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris on 13 February. Speaking with him were Annike Nyberg, Media Director at the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), and John Maguire, Director-General of the International Radio and Television Union (URTI).
Engida, who is also responsible for the Communication and Information sector at UNESCO, described the reach and richness of radio, explained why UNESCO had chosen the theme of Women’s Empowerment and Radio for 2014.
The Gala event was a concert produced by the Orchestre National de France at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris and broadcast live on France Musique.
It culminated a day in which five radio stations transmitted live from UNESCO headquarters, and around the world an estimated 200 radio stations carried programming related to World Radio Day, including in many cases audio clips downloaded from the UNESCO web page.
Plans for the 2015 World Radio Day were the subject of discussion at a meeting on 14 February between UNESCO and 13 international broadcast organisations. The Day will celebrate its fourth anniversary in 2015.
World Radio Day was proclaimed by UNESCO in 2011 and subsequently endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly.
