Connected Schools Program (Plan for the Digitalisation and Digital Competences of the Education System)

The Connected Schools Program is part of Spain's Digital Spain 2026 agenda launched in July 2020 as a roadmap for the country's digitalization process. This initiative falls under the Spanish National Plan for Digital Skills, which aligns with the European Commission Digital Education Action Plan 2021-2027. The Spanish Ministry of Education and Vocational Training is implementing this digitalization through the Plan for the Digitalisation and Digital Competences of the Education System (#DigEdu Plan).

The program has received significant funding through the European Union's Recovery and Resilience Mechanism, with €996 million allocated for digital equipment in schools, including the acquisition of over 300,000 portable devices to reduce the digital gap (€150M), installation of interactive digital systems in more than 240,000 classrooms (€827M), and technical training for teachers (€19M). The initiative aims to extend ultrafast network coverage to the entire population and prepare 100% of the radio spectrum for 5G by 2025.

The project includes specific strategies to reach the "last mile" of connectivity, ensuring that even the most remote and underserved schools can benefit from digital transformation. The initiative recognizes that while urban areas often have adequate infrastructure, rural and isolated communities face significant connectivity barriers that require targeted solutions.
