Last update:11 May 2023

In 2020 HRH Princess Laurentien called on UNESCO to take action to protect the world’s youngest children whose care and education were impacted by the COVID-19 crisis. Since then, 91Â鶹¹ú²ú¾«Æ·×ÔÅÄ organized three high-level meetings bringing together representatives of ministries, heads of agencies, and experts to explore how to strengthen early childhood services worldwide. As a result the  was formed in December 2021.

The GPS is a bridging strategy which responds to a lack of services ranging from pre-primary education, health, nutrition, sanitation, and child protection worldwide. It supports States in their obligations to ensure quality ECCE to children and families and aligns with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development’s Target 4.2, which aims to ensure that all girls and boys have access to quality pre-primary care and education to enable them to be ready for primary school.

The overall goal of the GPS is to ensure that ECCE, Early childhood development, and Early childhood investment services are fully inclusive, accessible, affordable, gender-responsive and equitable for each child. Effective policies and services for ECCE, ECD, and ECI also allow for maximum return on investment into child and family development, to transform society and build better communities.

As part of the GPS, UNESCO, OMEP and ECDAN have joined forces to launch a to mobilize governments, organizations, networks and individuals for a renewed commitment to action for young children.
