Education Management Information Systems (EMIS) are an essential tool to support decision-making at all levels and on all aspects of an education system and improve the management of learning. Challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic have made it clear that a modern EMIS must move beyond routine administrative tasks and student head counts to become an ecosystem that facilitates access to relevant data in real-time along with analysis and dissemination in friendly formats.

In order to rethink the definition and design of a modern EMIS, the International Future EMIS & Data Systems Community of Practice was established in February 2022 as a follow-up to the 2021 international seminar on re-imagining EMIS. It exists to bring together committed organizations to facilitate policy discussions and mutual learning among experts, policy-makers, private sector partners and practitioners who are interested in advancing the thinking towards future EMIS and education data systems. The community is organized in three thematic groups.
