About UNESCO Beijing

UNESCO Regional Office for East Asia (UNESCO Beijing) was established in 1984 and is responsible for projects and work in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Japan, Mongolia, the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Korea. Altogether, these countries encompass about 1/5 of the world’s population, around 25% of global economic output, and over 5,000 years of rich history and culture.
Together with other UNESCO units and the entire United Nations family, UNESCO Beijing works to find and implement innovative solutions in social, cultural, environmental and economic dimensions of sustainable development, helping countries to achieve their national development priorities and commitments on Sustainable Development Goals and the Education Agenda 2030.
In the five countries it serves, UNESCO Beijing has helped to establish 26 UNESCO Category 2 Centers, 67 Biosphere Reserves, and 103 World Heritage Sites (as of December 2022).
UNESCO Beijing has delivered and will continue its firm commitments in the following:
- to build capacities of key decision-making institutions;
- to help strengthen policies, standards, and practices in UNESCO’s areas of work;
- to promote cooperation between countries within and outside the region;
- and to make a lasting impact on people’s lives.
New Project Office in Mongolia
UNESCO Beijing is pleased to announce that we will open a project office in Mongolia from early 2024.
The purpose of this project office is to: 1) strengthen the implementation of Education Programme in Mongolia, and 2) forge ahead UNESCO’s new partnership with Rio Tinto Mongolia (RTM) to promote the Sustainable Tourism through UNESCO Cultural and Geo Heritage.
This project office symbolizes a significant milestone of UNESCO to establish a desk office physically resident in Mongolia for the first time, and the partnership with RTM is also ground-breaking, which is the first UNESCO-Private Sector cooperation in Mongolia.
