Freedom of Expression and Knowledge Society in Brazil

UNESCO Brasilia promotes freedom of expression and the safety of journalists. It also builds knowledge societies in the country.

Freedom of Expression and Safety of Journalists

UNESCO Brasilia promotes freedom of expression and the safety of journalists through sensitisation and monitoring activities. It also fosters media independence and pluralism as prerequisites and significant democratisation factors, as well as peace and tolerance-building by providing advisory services on media legislation and sensitising governments, parliamentarians, and other decision-makers. Besides, UNESCO Brasilia contributes to strengthening professional standards through capacity-building and self-regulation mechanisms (such as codes of ethics, press councils and in-house news ombuds).

Building Knowledge Societies and Innovations

Knowledge and information have a significant impact on people’s lives. The sharing of knowledge and information, mainly through Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), can transform economies and societies.

ICTs are fundamentally changing how people live, work, learn and socialise. However, 758 million adults worldwide, including 115 million youth, still lack the basic literacy skills needed to enjoy the benefits of increasingly digitised economies and participate fully in modern society.

Inclusive digital solutions can help people with low skills and low literacy use technology to support skills development and, ultimately, advance their livelihoods.

The Safety of Journalists in Brazil

UNESCO is committed to advancing the freedom of the press and the safety of journalists on all media platforms, offline and online, through various actions. These include awareness-raising, promoting partnerships, and coordinating the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists.

Since 1997, UNESCO’s Director-General has condemned each killing of a journalist. In addition, every two years, the Organization compiles a Report on The Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity to the Intergovernmental Council of the International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC).

UNESCO Brasilia has contributed by translating into Portuguese the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists, the summary of Reports on The Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity and other relevant publications. These translations have supported UNESCO and its partners in combating these issues in Brazil.
