The UNESCO Regional Office for the Gulf States and Yemen in Doha was established in 1976 and originally covered six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries –the Kingdom of Bahrain, the State of Kuwait, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Sultanate of Oman, the State of Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. A seventh country, the Republic of Yemen, joined in late 2009. 

Together with the entire United Nations family, the UNESCO Regional Office for the Gulf States and Yemen works across Major Programme Sectors of UNESCO:  Education, Natural Sciences; Social and Human Sciences; Culture; Communication and Information. The office implements innovative solutions in social, cultural, environmental and economic dimensions of sustainable development, helping countries to achieve their national development priorities and commitments on Sustainable Development Goals and the Education Agenda 2030, adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2015. 

The Office is committed to collaborating with the seven Member States and works through and in cooperation with the National Commissions for UNESCO in each country and partner networks in its fields of competence. This includes government partners, other intergovernmental organizations, NGOs, experts and researchers, private sector companies, foundations, media outlets, and other specialized institutions. 

The vision of the UNESCO Regional Office for the Gulf States and Yemen in Doha is to ”empower women and men to contribute to peaceful and inclusive knowledge-based societies, through education, the sciences, culture, and communication and information, in partnership with the Member States, the private sector, and civil society, to fulfill the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”
