On 9 November 2021 Ms Audrey Azoulay, was appointed as Director-General of UNESCO by the General Conference for a second mandate.

The installation ceremony will take place Monday 22 November 2021 during a special plenary session at 3 p.m. in Room I.

The session will be followed by a ceremony featuring testimonies and music.

The plenary session and the ceremony will be broadcast simultaneously in Room II as well as via .

Created in 1995 and named after Melina Mercouri, famous actress and former Greek Minister of Culture, this Prize rewards outstanding examples of action to safeguard and enhance the world鈥檚 cultural landscapes that embody an enduring, intimate relationship between people and their environment. Awarded every two years, the laureate of the Prize, who may be an individual, an institution or a non-governmental organization, receives an award of USD 30,000.

An event marking the Official Opening of the will take place from 13:15 to 15:00 in Room II.

UNESCO Africa week is the annual flagship event of the Africa Group at UNESCO, a body that brings together Member States of the African continent. Africa week includes a kaleidoscope of cultural, scientific, artistic and epicurean events in honor of Africa Day (25 May), when the Organization of African Unity (OAU), known today as the African Union (AU), was founded in 1963. Following the first phase of the 2021 edition of the Africa Week, which took place in May, the second phase of celebrations taking place 23-26 November 2021, will include a presentation of the book 鈥Africa at UNESCO Art Collection鈥, exhibitions of African properties inscribed on the World Heritage List, African Literary Works, film screenings, conferences, innovation hubs, a gala and much more!

Special Issue of the UNESCO Courier

For UNESCO鈥檚 75th anniversary, the Courier celebrates with a new monumental anthology,  UNESCO Courier: Transforming Ideas

Curated as an intercultural dialogue spanning three quarters of a century, the two-volume set features 58 of the most influential articles ever published in the magazine鈥檚 history. 

Volume I: Thinkers and Volume II: Creators spotlight the Courier鈥檚 celebrated authors, including anthropologists, historians, scientists, writers, artists, and well-known media personalities. Among them are Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, Ada Yonath, Wener Arber; Gabriel Garc铆a M谩rquez, Joseph Ki-Zerbo, Jorge Luis Borges, J.M.G. Le Cl茅zio; Claude L茅vi-Strauss, Edgar Morin, Souleymane Bachir Diagne, Yuval Noah Harari and many more.
