Second Latin American Community Management Meeting 鈥淭he voice in our own voice鈥 | From 6 to 9 August 2022

The second Latin American Meeting of Community Management "the voice in our own voice" brings together in person and virtually the voice of indigenous, non-indigenous and Afro-descendant community leaders from Latin America and the Caribbean seeking to promote consciousness and active management of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH). The Network for the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage Latin America and the Caribbean believes that this initiative will be successful if it is promoted by the communities through their role as creators of policies and actions that make viable the safeguarding of their ICH as the main axis of sustainable development. The 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the ICH recognizes the importance that communities, groups and, in some cases, individuals play in the maintenance and safeguarding of this heritage.

This side event will explore how these heritages are an important factor of rapprochement, exchange, cosmovision and understanding among indigenous, non-indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples. Knowing that the entire safeguarding policy is based on the importance of community participation as a core condition for all actions of the Member States, this side event aims to establish dialogues and actions that lead us to a substantive equality where we build together the world we long for. The event will be a space for dialogue where "the voice in our own voice" is heard.

Cultural and Linguistic Rights from the local level: opportunities and challenges Euskadi 2030 | 22 September 2022

The prologue of the Euskadi Basque Country 2030 Agenda states that the way to face global challenges from the local level in Euskadi will be based on the spirit of "auzolana", meaning collaboration and shared work in the pursuit of the common good. The auzolan (term in Basque) is a form of neighbourhood work for the benefit of the community, based on co-responsibility, participation and collaboration.

From that First Agenda to the current commitments adopted by the Basque Government to achieve the SDGs, there has been progress in cultural and linguistic rights. The Department of Culture and Linguistic Policy has assumed a total of 13 commitments and 74 initiatives for the current legislature that allude to the socioeconomic rights of cultural professionals, for instance encouraging the empowerment of women in the field of creation, the promotion of artistic education from an early age or a greater socialization of tangible and intangible heritage, among other aspects. UN Extea, a UNESCO association for the Basque country, aims to encourage dialogue among the participating agents and the presentation of experiences from their respective fields of work, as well as opportunities and challenges that they have encountered. This side event will benefit from the participation of representatives of the public administration, academia, business and the third sector, representing people whose cultural and linguistic rights may be violated.

17 Objectives and a map after all | 24 September 2022

The project "17 goals and a map" is a joint action between the University Extension Program (Programa de Extensi贸n Universitaria in Spanish) of Jaume I of Castell贸鈥 University (PEU UJI) which is part of the network of heritage communities of the Lighthouse Convention of the Council of Europe Framework Convention on the Value of Cultural Heritage for Society, also called Faro Convention. PEU UJI also works in the accompaniment of processes of local initiatives on cultural heritage, education, contemporary art and development-and the team of ARAE Heritage (ARAE Patrimonio, in Spanish), which has extensive experience in participatory workshops around the built cultural heritage and works actively in the democratization of heritage. This is a project that has been underway since 2020, and for which they have worked with heritage communities with different casuistry to exchange experiences, identifying and extracting SDG messages in their different projects. With this starting point, a new phase of work will be activated in which the work and means available to each of the communities will be analyzed to define good practices and quantify progress in sustainability. Within this framework, during this side event, a gamified global brainstorming, face-to-face and virtual, will be held in which, from anywhere in the world, public and private institutions and civil society will contribute ideas, actions, and concrete solutions to create a mapping of good practices that can serve as a reference in the implementation of the SDGs for other heritage communities.

The objectives of Sustainable Development and Industrial Heritage in the industrial museum of Sagunto's port | 25 September 2022

Arae Kids (Heritage and Restoration) | 25 September 2022

All cities hold the seeds of sustainable development through their heritage, which is often hidden by a lack of awareness of the value of place itself and the identity values of place. Furthermore, new uses of existing buildings, including monuments, are essential to rediscover the history of place (SDG11), save materials (SDG12) and thus create quality education for future generations (SDG4).

To achieve a sustainable future, children and youth will be key players. It is crucial to teach them the importance of urban planning and to stimulate their critical thinking on issues related to cities that are at the center of many sustainable development challenges today.

To this end, Arae Kids plans to directly involve children through a model-making workshop at the Museo Industrial de Puerto de Sagunto following a visit to the museum where the 17 SDGs and how the Organization contributes to them on a daily basis will be presented. The making of the individual models will be used to form a model of a participatory industrial city that will be exhibited at the Museo Industrial de Puerto de Sagunto.

Cooperatives are Key Stakeholders in advancing SDGs through Culture and Creative Sectors | 26 September 2022

International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) - 26 September 2022 - ICA HQ, Brussels (Belgium);Cooperatives of the Americas (Regional Office/Costa Rica and Project on the field/Chiapas-Mexico) and San Jos茅, Costa Rica and Chiapas, Mexico

The side-event aims to create awareness about the value and the international scope of the cooperative movement, which represents 1/7th of humanity, and is operational in nearly all UN Member States with constitutional recognition on 1/3rd of them.

The session will highlight cooperatives' current transformative action as well as future contributions to policy initiatives regarding SDGs, particularly through safeguarding cultural heritage and protecting stakeholder interests in the creative sectors. The premise for this side-event organized by the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA)is the 2016 inscription of the cooperative idea and practice into the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The main aim will be to demonstrate how cooperatives, guided by their universal values and seven principles, are advancing sustainable development through culture and creativity and to bring cooperatives closer to policy makers and strengthen their mutual relationship.

The session will provide specific examples how cooperatives are safeguarding cultural heritage on one hand, while also offering rapidly evolving solutions for the 21st century鈥檚 creative economy. The decade of action for the SDGs started with multiple crises related to global health and international peace & human rights, and cooperatives may well be able to offer resilient responses as well as for long term and internationally sustainable solutions to advance the SDGs.

Wooden Built Heritage in Sustainability and the Transmission of Culture | 27 August 2022

International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) Mexico

27th August 2022, 11:00-13:00 Mexico time

Wooden architecture is present all over the world, in rural and vernacular areas.  It represents a large part of the ancestral ways and knowledge of the generating and user communities. It is a product that transmits to the future not only the construction techniques of the past, the ancestral knowledge, but also the use of traditional and endemic materials of the cultural region.  This heritage is capable of uniting communities and promoting their social and economic development. Thanks to the knowledge and good use of wood as a traditional renewable material, it is also possible to conserve the endemic flora of the territory, as well as to contribute values of authenticity to the regional culture. This heritage is being lost day by day due to the substitution of wood by other modern construction elements.  This causes the loss of cultural heritage, traditions and intangible heritage.  The indiscriminate felling of forests for profit is produced, without replacing them with reforestation programs, the land becomes poor and arid.  Social cohesion and support for sustainable development is lost, causing poverty and migration. Thus, the speakers of this side event, organized by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) Mexico, will present cases highlighting positive and negative practices in the conservation of heritage built with wood. A discussion on the practices that have been presented in the conservation of heritage will also take place in this side even and ICOMOS Mexico will take into consideration the proposals when defining new cultural policies and actions that will be carried out in the short, medium and long term. A draft  of the conclusions will be written and this document will be submitted to the organizers to help wooden built heritage gain momentum in the cultural sector.

Fair Culture 鈥 A key to Sustainable Development | 27 September 2022

Fair Trade principles address poor labour standards and global inequalities. While they have been widely implemented in several economic sectors over the last decades, culture and creative sectors have not been part of the discussion so far.

Inequalities are indeed a key challenge for the cultural sector and creative industries, particularly between countries of the Global South and the Global North, as highlighted in latest UNESCO Global Reports on Culture. The reports show how cultural goods and services are increasingly disseminated in digital networks, transforming value chains. Furthermore, the Covid19 pandemic had an additional dramatic impact on artists and the entire cultural ecosystem, exacerbating inequalities, making the conversation about 鈥淔air Culture鈥 even more urgent.

Thus, thi8s side event aims to mobilize for the international recognition of the pivotal role of culture for sustainable development, social inclusion, and international peace. The event advocates for the 鈥淔air Culture鈥 approach to becoming an integral part of reforms of the cultural sector and of a future UN framework for sustainable development. The German Commission will take on the recommendations of a vast international conceptual study 鈥溾 carried out by the UNESCO Chair for Cultural Diversity Laval. The cooperation partners will gather a truly global group of experts at MONDIACULT 2022 to elaborate the concept of 鈥淔air Culture鈥 鈥 adapting Fair Trade principles to culture and creative sectors.

Cultural Policies on Sustainable Development in Our Communities | 26 and 27 September 2022

African Youth International Development Foundation (AYIDF) - 26 and 27 September 2022

As the role of culture is insufficiently addressed, in the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015, the African Youth International Development Foundation (AYIDF) argues that this absence is rooted in the lounge duress of interplay among theoretical and policy debates on culture in sustainable development and on cultural policy since the mid-twentieth century.

In public policymaking at the national, regional, and local levels of government, the relation between cultural policy and sustainable development is highly topical, albeit under-researched. The recognition of this link is essential and could revitalize a new role for cultural actors (including arts, heritage, and socio -cultural activities) at all levels and potentially transform the politics of cultural policy. This side event aims to advance the formation of principles for a new approach to culture and sustainability in the strategies of cultural policies, theoretical perspectives on culture, cultural policy and ecological sustainability. The AYIDF will also question in what senses are cultural policies related to ecological sustainability, and how cultural policy may contribute to sustainable development. Moreover, we will engage with these phenomena by drawing more attention to the theoretical underpinnings of cultural policy's understandings of the concept of culture and we will relate cultural policy to ecological sustainability; and emphasize on the importance of making these ecological relationships visible and accountable in our communities.

What Design Can Do 鈥 Perspectives from the ground | 27 September 2022

What Design Can Do (WDCD)

27 September 2022

Design and culture create possibilities and space to look at societal challenges from a holistic and transversal perspective. They enable us to imagine and build a better future. To tap into this transformative potential, What Designs Can Do (WDCD) aims to illustrate what sustainable and inclusive development can look like in practice. What Designs Can Do is an international organization focused on accelerating the transition to a sustainable, fair and just society using the power of designs in Latin America, North America, Africa, Asia and Europe. WDCD and The Prince Claus Fund for Culture and Development have invited prominent members of the creative community from Mexico and the region to engage in a dialogue on what design and culture can do to stimulate inclusive sustainable development. Therefore, this side event aims to delve deeper into the engaged practice of inspiring role models rooted in the Global South. The main objective is to build on previous actions such as Open Microphone, ResiliArt and the international forums that have been held by UNESCO and the Ministry of Culture in Mexico. By bringing together prominent voices from the creative industries, politics, government and civil society WDCD will build the perfect framework to explore how culture and international collaboration can best stimulate inclusive bottom-up change aimed at leaving no one behind. Taking an intersectional inclusive approach, the panel session will explore themes such as decolonizing design, preserving indigenous practice, gender equality and LGTBQI and black rights.

Open focus group 鈥 Dance arts 4 SDGs: moving with the people on move, orange feather acts | 29 September 2022

Agency for Cultural Diplomacy (ACD) | 29 September 2022

The Agency for Cultural Diplomacy (ACD) has played a crucial role during the current implementation of the 17 SGDs not only in Austria, but also in Europe and even at an international level, though their cooperative educational, cultural and scientific projects.  ACD will open a debate on how the narrative of sustainability is translated in diverse cultural practices in Austria, Europewide, and worldwide. Furthermore, this side event will shed light on how culture can be practiced and communicated more effectively, to prevent and ban raising violence, and support health and wellbeing, but also at what extent the art can impact and support cultural policy for sustainable development. Overall, we will discuss on what are the important cultural spheres we should put your effort and focus, while finding solutions to improve youth鈥檚 perception on SDGs. This side event will try to respond to these matters by putting together multiple good practices and diverse perspectives on the role of communication, the role that culture can play when achieving the sustainable development goals with the help of Austrian and international cultural institutes, alongside media CSOs and the voice of young people.
