About
Promoting Sustainable Tourism in Mongolia Through UNESCO Cultural and Geo Heritage is a three-year project supported by the Rio Tinto Mongolia through a total funding of US$ 1.5 million. The project is implemented through UNESCO Regional Office for East Asia in Beijing and Ulaanbaatar Antenna Office, in coordination with Mongolian National Commission for UNESCO and local partners.
The project will be able to leverage UNESCO鈥檚 intersectoral capacities of experts and partners, especially Culture and Natural Sciences, with the overall coordination across the UNESCO Regional Office for East Asia.

Objectives

Strengthen the management and promotion of Mongolia鈥檚 living and geo cultural resources and assets for sustainable tourism

Strengthened capacities in promoting understanding, visibility and interest for Mongolia鈥檚 unique heritage, landscapes, natural resources and earth heritage inside and outside Mongolia

Establish a multi-stakeholder platform for promotion of sustainable tourism

Strengthen innovative and sustainable support to local communities with enhanced capacities to sustainably exploit their territories

Enhance income generation opportunities for local communities using their local cultural resources

Mapping Study of Mongolia鈥檚 Aspiring Geopark Area
This comprehensive mapping study was conducted by a group of researchers from Mongolia to identify potential geological and natural heritage sites within the Khanbogd and Manlai soums of the Umnugovi province, as well as the surrounding areas, with the aim of establishing a UNESCO Global Geopark in the country.
The findings from the mapping study will aid in:
Defining the geographic boundaries of the aspiring geopark through discussions with stakeholders including the National Geopark Committee and local communities.
Establishing a dedicated management team for the aspiring geopark.
Identifying the roles and responsibilities of all stakeholders involved in the geopark's establishment and development.
