Bringing the history of women in archaeology to light
The project ¡°Retrieving Memory: Women¡¯s Pathways in the History of Spanish Archaeology (19th and 20th Centuries)¡± (´¡°ù±ç³Ü±ð¨®±ô´Ç²µ´¡²õ) (), launched in 2020, has played a pivotal role in increasing the visibility of women in archaeology, using Spain as a case study. One of its main objectives has been to gather approximately 200 biographies of women who have contributed to the creation and transmission of archaeological knowledge since the 18th century (). Recovering the memory of these women, who are often absent from the histories of archaeology, helps dismantle gender stereotypes within the field. This initiative not only preserves their legacies but also challenges the traditionally male-dominated narratives of the discipline. Through its efforts, the ´¡°ù±ç³Ü±ð¨®±ô´Ç²µ´¡²õ project provides contemporary and aspiring archaeologists with diverse female role models, fostering a more inclusive and equitable environment in archaeology. The ´¡°ù±ç³Ü±ð¨®±ô´Ç²µ´¡²õ project is having an effect in other countries such as Italy, Per¨² and China.
