ScienceDB repository and award
Science Data Bank (ScienceDB) is an open, non-profit global public repository that supports researchers, academic journals in sharing, publishing and accessing data. At the time of writing at the end of 2024, researchers from over 130 countries or regions around the world share data via ScienceDB, while researchers from over 210 countries or regions access data from ScienceDB.
ScienceDB is committed to reducing barriers for data sharing all over the world, ensuring long-term data preservation and global accessibility, and alleviating the data gap caused by unequal capacity in infrastructure development. ScienceDB promotes the construction of an open data culture in China and other developing countries. The team has launched a series of bilingual data policy templates to support global stakeholders’ practice and organized training activities around open data. To date, ScienceDB has served over 1,6000 journals/institutions for data publishing. ScienceDB co-published the first version of the China State of Open Data Report 2023 with Springer Nature and figshare ().
ScienceDB is globally accessible and is a fully open data resource, providing data resources around the world, especially high-quality data from China. All metadata within ScienceDB are under a CC0 license and are openly accessible via standardized protocols. The repository adheres to the FAIR principles () and TRUST principles (). All data on this practice are disseminated to the global scientific community by international data indexing platforms, including Google Dataset Search, Data Citation Index, DataCite, etc.
The repository provides a Data Community service, facilitating the aggregation of data resources from specific disciplines, journals and data centers. More than 300 Data Communities have been established within the repository. Additionally, ScienceDB implements fully transparent data policies and terms of service to protect the interests of data depositors. Meanwhile, the repository delivers a full range of support services, including User Support Manual, email responses and more.
ScienceDB established the “ScienceDB Scientific Data Award” in 2020, to encourage and recognize outstanding datasets and data authors. This award is held every two years and has already been held three times. The ScienceDB team organizes and evaluates this award, and the evaluation criteria are made public online (). Currently, ScienceDB provides certificates and souvenirs for the award-winners and promotes these data authors and datasets through various media methods.
