National Safety Context

According to the Observatory of Killed Journalists there have been 5 killings in Georgia since 1993. None of these crimes have been judicially resolved according to the latest Director-General's Report on the Safety of Journalists and the Danger of Impunity. Georgia responded to the Director-General's request for information on the judicial status of the cases of these killed journalists every year since 2015.

National Action Plan

National Strategy for the Protection of Human Rights in Georgia (2022-2030)

The National Strategy for the Protection of Human Rights has been active since March 2023.

What activities are carried out?

The National Strategy plans for the implementation of several measures to address the safety of journalists and the issue of impunity in Georgia. 

The Strategy plans to produce statistics on attacks against journalists and human rights defenders related to their professional activities. The Prosecutor’s Office is set to produce statistics on cases related to obstruction of journalists from exercising their duties.

The Strategy also envisages the capacity-building of prosecutors and investigators in order to enhance investigation of crimes against journalists. Connected to this measure is the development of methodologies to enhance investigations into these types of cases.

How is it implemented? / Who are the stakeholders? 

The National Strategy was developed by the relevant state institutions, with the coordination of the Administration of the Government of Georgia.
