Strengthening the agile broadcasting capacity and disaster preparedness of SIDS media
UNESCO is enhancing the capabilities of media organizations in SIDS, including Caribbean and Pacific SIDS, to report on climate change and disaster risks. In several SIDS, such as Antigua and Barbuda, Fiji, the Bahamas, Haiti, the Marshall Islands, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Tuvalu, the Organization has equipped the national public broadcasters or community media with mobile radio broadcasting kits, i.e. radio boxes, to enhance their adaptable broadcasting capacity during emergencies. Compact enough to fit in a standard backpack, the radio box enables reporters to produce high-quality content in real-time, even when on the move and without access to their studios.
The support also includes capacity development, such as training and mentoring on reinforcing climate-media programmes with digital tools. Additionally, it strives to improve institutional strategies and plans for disaster preparedness and response. It further promotes practicing data-driven and solutions-oriented reporting on climate issues and improving agile broadcasting capacity during emergencies.
