Social Media 4 Peace
Social Media 4 Peace (SM4P) is a global initiative implemented by UNESCO to build societies’ resilience to online harmful content—including disinformation and hate speech—while safeguarding freedom of expression and fostering peace through social media.
In the digital world, harmful online content can deepen social divisions and even trigger offline violence, which is particularly true in conflict-prone and polarised societies. At the same time, efforts to address the harms of online content must respect and protect human rights, in particular freedom of expression and access to information. SM4P works to strike this balance between addressing the spread and impact of harmful content while protecting freedom of expression. Importantly, the project aims to capture social, cultural, and linguistic nuances of the geographical areas where it operates to develop locally informed strategies that contribute to peace narratives and advance human rights for all.
Since 2021, the project has been implemented in four pilot countries: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Colombia, Indonesia, and Kenya. In 2025, building on the knowledge and lessons learned in that initial phase, the project has expanded its efforts to Iraq, Kyrgyzstan, and South Africa, bringing its approach to other countries facing similar challenges.
