[Translate to espanol:] Mexico declaration on teachers reaffirms central role in Education 2030 agenda
[Translate to espanol:] The ambitious Sustainable Development Goal 4 on education can only be achieved “if educational systems have a qualified and motivated teaching force.”
[Translate to espanol:] Those words form part of the Teachers for Education 2030 Declaration adopted at the 8th International Policy Dialogue Forum – International Task Force on Teachers (TTF) in Mexico City on 17 March, 2016.
The declaration calls for the TTF to:
- Reinforce its position as a global alliance and develop its post-2016 strategic plan to respond to the SDG agenda;
- Continue to disseminate policy-relevant knowledge, support countries to develop and implement evidence-informed teacher policies;
- Urge all members and partners to vigorously pursue their efforts to achieve SDG 4 target on teachers;
- Call for further investment in teachers;
- Contribute to monitoring progress towards the realization of the SDG 4 target on teachers.
Professional development to bridge supply and quality gap
More than 300 national and international policy-makers, researchers, representatives of intergovernmental organizations, NGOS and teachers met for the Task Force annual meeting and 8th Policy Dialogue Forum, held in Mexico City, from 12 to 17 March, 2016.
The theme of the Forum was “Implementing the Teacher Target in the Sustainable Development Goal for education and Education 2030.”
The declaration affirmed the importance of professional development and support and use of ICTs as vital to bridge gaps in teacher supply and quality in order to achieve SDG 4. The teacher target calls for the need to “By 2030, substantially increase the supply of qualified teachers, including through international cooperation for teacher training in developing countries, especially least developed countries and small island developing States.”
