Data-Pop Alliance
Overview of the organization
Data-Pop Alliance (www.datapopalliance.org) is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization created in 2013 by a group of pioneers of the ‘Data Revolution’ movement at the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, MIT Media Lab, and ODI with $400,000 seed funding from the Rockefeller Foundation. It is directed by Emmanuel Letouzé, its co-founder alongside Prof. Patrick Vinck (Harvard) and Prof. Alex Pentland (MIT). As of March 2024, our core team is composed of 36 full-time staff based in nearly 15 countries who collectively speak 13 languages, to which we add international and national consultants from our network as needed. In institutional terms, DPA is registered under the official name of DPA Foundation, Inc. as a non-profit (charity) organization under the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS) 501(c)(3) designation. We also operate through branches in Mexico since 2019, Senegal since 2021, and France since 2022.
Project and activity overview
Positioned as a ‘Think-and-do Lab’, DPA’s mission is to “Change the world with data”. By this we mean leveraging and shaping data and technologies to contribute to fairer, safer, and more sustainable human societies, especially in countries and communities in the Global South. In an era of great turmoil and uncertainty where technology, AI and social media undoubtedly contribute to political polarization, 'post-truth' discourses, inequalities, environmental degradation, distrust, disdain, and more, we continue to believe that these very same digital data and technologies are among the most powerful tools at our disposal to achieve developmental objectives, including the SDGs.
To achieve that, DPA’s work is structured along three main pillars and corresponding goals that are foundational to its structure: (1) ‘Diagnose’ local realities and human problems with data and artificial intelligence; (2) ‘Mobilize’ the resources and ideas of decision-makers and citizens by strengthening data capacities and communities; and finally, (3) ‘Transform’ the systems and processes that underpin our societies and countries in ethical ways. As is the case for most of our projects, our proposed support would fall under all 3 pillars to varying degrees, especially the (1) ‘Diagnose’ and (3) ‘Transform’ pillars, with elements of the (2) ‘Mobilize’ pillar and corresponding activities (such as policy workshops). These pillars of work represent a theory of change, and ways of addressing development problems using data and technology in a range of thematics with regards to human development. In that sense, we divided our work on 6 thematic Programs: 1) “Just Digital Transformations”, 2) “AI and Statistics for the SDGs”, 3) “Resilient Livelihoods and Ecosystems”, 4) “Data Feminism”, 5) “Geographies of Inequalities”, and 6) “Technology and Democracy”.
