Homo Digitalis
Overview of the organization
Homo Digitalis (HD) is the first Greek Civil Non-Profit Organization that focuses on the protection of Human Rights in the digital age and the only Greek member of the European Digital Rights (EDRi) network. HD has three pillars of actions, namely awareness raising, advocacy, and strategic litigation. Over the past 6 years, it has accomplished impressive results, placing itself as the leading CSO in the digital rights field in Greece and one of the most prominent at EU level when it comes to the interplay between the protection of human rights and the deployment of AI technologies.
Project and activity overview
Homo Digitalis has accomplished important successes in the 3 pillars of our activities.
In the field of legal actions, our cases against intrusive AI technologies have resulted in the highest GDPR fines ever imposed in Greece on both public authorities (The Hellenic Ministry of Asylum and Migration - 175.000 euro for violations in the KENTAUROS and HYPERION case, https://edri.org/our-work/greek-ministry-of-asylum-and-migration-face-a-record-breaking-e175000-fine-for-the-border-management-systems-kentauros-hyperion/) and private actors (CLEARVIEW AI case - 20 million euro https://www.dpa.gr/en/en/enimerwtiko/prakseisArxis/imposition-fine-clearview-ai-inc) . Also, we have other 5 pending cases before DPAs across EU on AI related matters.
In the field of advocacy, the Reclaim Your Face European Citizens Initiative of the EDRi network, which Homo Digitalis co-founded, influenced the official position of the European Parliament against the use of biometric mass surveillance in public spaces (https://edri.org/our-work/european-parliament-draws-red-line-against-biometric-surveillance-society/).
In the field of awareness raising, we have provided educative activities, including presentations and exhibitions to more than 3.000 students in Greece (age 10 to 18) on matters related to AI, data analytics and digital technologies helping them to understand their rights and freedoms and the ways they can exercise them in practice (https://homodigitalis.gr/en/posts/132259/)
