01: The Invention of Radio
Presenting a World Radio Day Minute. Proclaimed in 2011 by UNESCO and endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as a UN International Day, February 13 is World Radio Day…

Did you know radio is over 100 years old? Actually, radio spans three centuries and two millennia. It emerged in the late 19th century as wireless telegraphy, thrived in the 20th century as the first mass medium, and remains relevant in the 21st century evolving with digital technology and modern culture. Although Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1909 for his major contributions to its development, the actual process of sending signals over the air via electromagnetic waves was predicted as early as the 1860s and invented in stages by brilliant scientists and engineers from all over the world. 02: The Many Forms of Radio
Presenting a World Radio Day Minute. Proclaimed in 2011 by UNESCO and endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as a UN International Day, February 13 is World Radio Day…

As a consumer electronics appliance, radio has been through many configurations since first appearing on store shelves in the early 20th century. It’s been mostly AM which stands for amplitude modulation and FM which means frequency modulation. But we mustn’t forget that short wave and ham radio have also been important during these hundred-plus years. There was even a time when radio was listened to with headphones on simple non-powered devices called crystal sets. Today AM/FM radios come with a variety of power sources including batteries, solar panels and cranks to generate energy. Now, in the digital era, we have DAB radio, satellite radio, streaming radio and the development of radio-style innovations such as podcasting. Radio continues to evolve! 03: Radio is the Theater of the Mind
Presenting a World Radio Day Minute. Proclaimed in 2011 by UNESCO and endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as a UN International Day, February 13 is World Radio Day…

What is radio’s greatest asset in competing with television, movies, videos and other visual media brought to the user via a screen? It’s the remarkable ability of the human brain and consciousness to generate imagination. The power of the spoken word to tell stories, enhanced in some cases by music and emotion, is virtually unlimited. Radio broadcasters are neither restricted by financial budgets in setting a scene nor physical boundaries in building a set. Reporters need not be accompanied by camera crews to cover fast breaking news events. They are only limited by their own language skills, powers of observation and passion. That’s why radio is the theater of the mind! This has been a World Radio Day minute from UNESCO.

04: The Convenience of Radio
Presenting a World Radio Day Minute. Proclaimed in 2011 by UNESCO and endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as a UN International Day, February 13 is World Radio Day…

We all love our screens. There’s an old saying, a picture is worth a thousand words… but that only goes so far, even though computer screens are seemingly everywhere – even on our watches. It is inconvenient and even dangerous to watch visual media or to read while driving, running, multitasking or working on something that requires observational concentration. How about when trying to fall asleep? Even when your head is tilted sideways – radio’s message is always straight! There’s a lot to be said for the basic convenience and flexibility of the spoken word, music, sound and the sense of hearing. Yes, radio is true mobile media and certainly easy on the eyes!

05: Radio, the First Responder
Presenting a World Radio Day Minute. Proclaimed in 2011 by UNESCO and endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as a UN International Day, February 13 is World Radio Day…

In times of emergency, such as natural disasters or the destruction of war, we are reminded of the fragility of our modern infrastructure. The public - dependent on the electric grid, the internet and the computer – is vulnerable to breakdowns in communication. That’s why AM/FM radio has been called the first responder of media. It is to the advantage of everyone, including governments, to maintain and protect emergency radio frequencies for the public dissemination of vital information. When the lights go out and the internet shuts down – an increasingly common occurrence - broadcast radio serves as an invaluable lifeline. Be sure your home and car are equipped at all times with a self-powered portable radio and fresh batteries. This has been a World Radio Day minute from UNESCO.

06: Radio, the Grass Roots Mass Medium
Presenting a World Radio Day Minute. Proclaimed in 2011 by UNESCO and endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as a UN International Day, February 13 is World Radio Day…

One of radio’s enduring traits is its grass roots focus. When it comes to emerging trends in music, pop culture, sports, news and opinion – radio has always been most effective when it reflects and gives voice to the street. The music, language and concerns of everyday people – no matter their age, gender, origin or economic position – can be included. Freedom of expression has had an advocate – a fertile ground in which to grow – on the radio airwaves. That’s been one of the keys to radio’s popularity and ability to survive for well over 100 years – and it’s the answer to what it will take for the medium to have a positive impact on inclusion and mutual understanding for the foreseeable 21st century. 07: Radio and the Automobile Industry
Presenting a World Radio Day Minute. Proclaimed in 2011 by UNESCO and endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as a UN International Day, February 13 is World Radio Day…

The worldwide radio community is concerned over a number of automobile manufacturers’ plans to no longer install AM radios in their new electric vehicles because of static (something that could be remedied). This increases the risk of both AM and FM devices being removed shortly thereafter from all types of new cars based on the controversial premise that terrestrial radio is on the verge of obsolescence like CDs, cassettes and 8-tracks. Such action can provide a hardship to the millions of people around the world without access to WiFi, as well as those who depend on AM radios as a life-line to their communities, religious services and basic news, traffic, sports and weather. Learn as much as you can about this issue and make informed decisions. This has been a World Radio Day minute from UNESCO.

08: Radio and Broadcasting
Presenting a World Radio Day Minute. Proclaimed in 2011 by UNESCO and endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as a UN International Day, February 13 is World Radio Day…

Radio is often called the first social media. Especially two-way talk radio. Radio was also the first electronic media platform that was referred to as broadcasting. It basically means sending a signal from one - or a media base such as a station – to the many, such as the broad-based public. The modern-day term, narrowcasting means sending a signal from one - or a point of origin - to the few… or a more targeted or localized audience such as a specific age group, or within a campus. So, where did the term broadcasting actually originate? It was an agricultural term meaning the sowing of seeds in a field by casting them broadly about. Then it was used to describe the widespread distribution of information via the printing press. This has been a World Radio Day minute from UNESCO.

The depth and breadth of radio’s programming these past 100+ years has been spectacular – especially in the arts. One area of the arts, perhaps most- deeply connected to radio, is music. The spectrum of music over more than 10 decades of radio has been diverse and reflective of the changing taste of the times as well as the colorful tapestry of world cultures. Going all the way back to Ragtime, these include Swing, Jazz, Blues, Classical, Big Band, Rock & Roll, Country, Folk, Calypso, Rhythm & Blues, Bollywood, Reggae, K-Pop, C-Pop, J-Pop, Hindustani, Juju, Rap, Hip Hop and so much more. Through its dynamic relationship with music, radio supports culture and creativity, in addition to preserving heritage, thereby enrichening our lives. 10: Radio Re-invents Itself
Presenting a World Radio Day Minute. Proclaimed in 2011 by UNESCO and endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as a UN International Day, February 13 is World Radio Day…

When television first burst on the scene, people thought it would eliminate radio which programmed audio drama, comedy, variety s and chat shows… now available on TV with the additional video component. But radio re-invented itself. It was perfect for music, live news, sports and talk shows… especially with the growth of the car radio and portable units you could take to the beach. When live orchestras broadcasting from big studio theaters became unwieldy – radio turned to records, DJs and smaller, efficient studios. And while TV stations still featured “blocks” of different scheduled programs, radio invented entire station formats such as Top 40, all news and all sports - predating today’s cable and streaming TV channels. Presenting a World Radio Day Minute. Proclaimed in 2011 by UNESCO and endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as a UN International Day, February 13 is World Radio Day…

Did you know that the Eiffel Tower in Paris was involved in the early development of radio? And radio was equally involved in saving the Tower from its scheduled demolition shortly after serving its original purpose as a temporary symbol of the 1889 Paris Exposition Universelle – a major world’s fair. In 1903, radiotelegraphy equipment was installed on the iconic French landmark giving the giant structure a whole new purpose – especially as a military communications asset - and extending its use long enough for people to not only get used to it – but to love it. For many years the Eiffel Tower's transmitter was one of the most powerful in the world. This has been a World Radio Day minute from UNESCO.

12: The Boundary Between Fact and Fiction
Presenting a World Radio Day Minute. Proclaimed in 2011 by UNESCO and endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as a UN International Day, February 13 is World Radio Day…

Since media transmit both news and entertainment , they could help educate audiences about how to distinguish fact from fiction. Fiction mistaken as news is not just a modern phenomenon. In 1938, flamboyant actor/director Orson Welles’ Mercury Theater presented an adaption of H.G. Wells’ “War of the Worlds” on the CBS Radio Network the night before Halloween that reportedly instigated panic among thousands of listeners who thought New Jersey USA was being invaded by Martians. Today, more than any time in history, people should have competencies to critical analyse information. Radio can empower listeners to be more discerning. Presenting a World Radio Day Minute. Proclaimed in 2011 by UNESCO and endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as a UN International Day, February 13 is World Radio Day…

Do you remember the jingles from the radio stations you grew up with? Jingles, sounders, and bumpers are terms used to describe production elements used by radio stations to establish and promote their brands. Although jingles go back decades and evolved over the years, they remain effective and popular – especially in commercial radio. They make radio sound like, well radio. They are also a mainstay of the advertising world to promote products on the radio. There are jingles that go back to 1926. Thousands of radio stations on the five geographical regions maintain the tradition of using station-identifying jingles in a variety of languages to specifically brand their platforms while maintaining the general flavor of being radio. Presenting a World Radio Day Minute. Proclaimed in 2011 by UNESCO and endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as a UN International Day, February 13 is World Radio Day…

Radio is a well-established mass medium of everyday people and therein lies its strength and importance. Accessible, portable and affordable… it has the power to connect the people of a town, a region, a nation and, ideally, the world. Radio has the potential to bring the diverse people of the world together into the same wonderful mosaic that exists on the local level… a sense of community. It has the ability to fuel marketplaces of both commerce and art, as well as recreation. And most important, marketplaces of ideas… operated and utilized by engaged people of goodwill with civility and certainly with respect for each other’s differences. 15: Vigilance Against Human Rights Violations
Presenting a World Radio Day Minute. Proclaimed in 2011 by UNESCO and endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as a UN International Day, February 13 is World Radio Day…

Any form of technology can be a double-edged sword, and defenders of freedom and facts must always maintain vigilance. Radio is no different. During its first century, radio has stepped forward on the side of democracy as a vehicle and champion for human rights more often than not. One of the keys to radio’s ability to provide a vigilance against human right violations has been its structural diversity – as an institution composed of both large and small organizations… from major national government and corporate giants to small mom and pop operations marching to the beat of their own drummers in service to the people whom they know very well within the reach of their signals. 16: Radio and Information
Presenting a World Radio Day Minute. Proclaimed in 2011 by UNESCO and endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as a UN International Day, February 13 is World Radio Day…

Three services that radio provides are informing, entertaining, and educating. Let’s look at informing. News comes in many forms – world, national, and local – covering topics ranging from geo-politics to local policy, from health and safety to weather and road conditions. At UNESCO, we consider the term “news” to mean verifiable information in the public interest, and information that falls short of this standard does not deserve the label of “news.” The rise of disinformation and manipulation in modern communications is a danger that leads to hate and violent extremism. The public should consume media with critical thinking and hold all platforms from national networks to social media – including radio – accountable for accuracy. Presenting a World Radio Day Minute. Proclaimed in 2011 by UNESCO and endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as a UN International Day, February 13 is World Radio Day…

Three services that radio provides are informing, entertaining, and educating. Let’s look at entertaining. Radio has a century-long tradition of providing the public with a wide variety of programs and elements that fall under the banner of entertainment. Of course, music is at the top of the list. At the heart of their very existence, both radio and music are audio media and extremely compatible. But radio has also been a major platform for entertainment via the spoken word. Radio drama, sports play-by-play, humor to lift the spirit and companionship, to soothe the soul, are services provided by radio. And entertainment reflects culture and heritage which, in turn, connect to understanding our differences as well as our common humanity. This has been a World Radio Day minute from UNESCO.

Three services that radio provides are informing, entertaining, and educating. Let’s look at educating. Radio is a great educator covering all from basic education to the academic disciplines of history, science, civics, psychology, economics, practical instruction, self-improvement and more. Radio helps people in hard-to-reach areas, fix their roofs, grow their gardens, repair their cars, eat healthy foods, get exercise, manage their money, get along with friends and families… and vote with an understanding of democratic principles. Education is the remedy to ignorance. Enlightenment fosters critical thinking, inclusion and mutual understanding that contribute to peace. This has been a World Radio Day minute from UNESCO.

19: Freedom of Expression
Presenting a World Radio Day Minute. Proclaimed in 2011 by UNESCO and endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as a UN International Day, February 13 is World Radio Day…

For democracy to survive and even thrive, and for peace to ultimately prevail in times of heightened discord and tension, it is important for radio and those guiding its programming to remain true to the fundamental principles of freedom of expression and right to information. In a noisy world of competing narratives, reliable broadcasters treat guests, callers, listeners and each other with respect and civility. Radio will survive in the years to come if its practitioners avoid the tendency to pursue victory at the expense of accuracy and fairness. For more than a century as an iconic mass medium, radio has generated goodwill and has more often than not been guided by this compass. May it continue in that direction. In this modern age of instantaneous communications and social media, all platforms - from the most powerful media conglomerates and government-run agencies to independent blogs and podcasts - face increased competition for attention, influence and renewable sources of revenue. One of the purposes of World Radio Day is to encourage support of the centuries-spanning accomplishments of radio as a medium that draws its main sustenance through roots imbedded deep within the communities it serves. It is to celebrate the efforts of radio to inform, entertain and educate its audiences around the world and to encourage the free-flowing communication of ideas that lead to sustainable human development.
