Presentation

The Enhancing Intellectual Property Rights in Ethiopia (EIPRE) project is an initiative led by Selam Ethiopia, a non-governmental organization (NGO). This project addresses systemic gaps in intellectual property rights within Ethiopia’s visual and performing arts sector.

EIPRE focuses on raising awareness about the importance of intellectual property rights, sharing best practices nationally and internationally, and providing training in legal frameworks, copyright registration, commercialization strategies, digital technology and technical assistance.

How does this project contribute to the implementation of the 2005 Convention?

  • Create a supportive environment for intellectual property rights: The project works to protect and monetize intellectual property rights effectively within Ethiopia’s cultural sector.
  • Address skill gaps and empower cultural and creative industries: It identifies and tackles critical gaps in capacities and resources for the creation, production, and distribution of cultural goods and services. By equipping artists and creative rights holders with the tools they need, the project promotes sustainable economic development within Ethiopia’s cultural industries.
  • Foster collaboration for cultural policymaking: EIPRE brings together stakeholders—including government authorities, cultural institutions, artists and community organizations—to shape cultural policies and strengthen partnerships.
  • Enhance policymaking and implementation: The project raises awareness about intellectual property rights among artists and stakeholders, driving improvements in Ethiopia’s visual and performing arts sector.

Main Activities

  • Awareness-raising workshops: Organize national workshops on intellectual property rights and legal frameworks within the visual and performing arts sector.
  • Guidelines and toolkits: Develop and distribute comprehensive materials to guide the protection of intellectual property rights in Ethiopia’s cultural sector.
  • Online platform: Establish a digital platform to facilitate copyright registration for artists and provide accessible information on intellectual property rights.
