13th Meeting of the Scientific Board of the International Basic Sciences Programme (IBSP)
Basic Sciences bring new knowledge and a deep understanding of natural phenomena. The discoveries offer novel opportunities for the transformation of experimental study into the educational, cultural and  intellectual  enrichment  of  humanity. The development of basic science is crucial for human activities and its advancement underlies technological breakthroughs. Vice versa, it offers unique opportunities to meet basic human needs, produce economic, social and environment benefits, thus contribute to the global sustainable development goals. In this light, the International Basic Sciences Programme (IBSP) was established by UNESCO Member States in order to reinforce intergovernmental cooperation and co-operation between partner organizations in science to strengthen national capacities in the basic sciences.
Basic sciences are the root of the progressive development and advancement of medicine, information, communication and space technologies, and many other fields, however, the benefits from those fields are not evenly distributed. Many countries find themselves excluded from the endeavor to create, and consequently, profit from scientific knowledge. Under the context of global pandemic crisis of the Covid-19, it does not only bring devastating consequence to the global public health, the unprecedented disruption for the development of basic science has been paused.
The virtual meeting of the IBSP Scientific Board will take place on 23-24 September 2021 from 1:00 to 4:30pm (CET). Members of the board from all regions, as well as major partners will come together to discuss the development of basic science in the future, specifically to meet the following objectives:
Building national capacities for basic science research, training, science  education  and  popularization  of  science  through  international  and  regional  cooperation  in  development-oriented  areas  of  national priority,
Transfer and sharing of scientific information and excellence in science through North-South and South-South cooperation,
provision of scientific expertise for, and advice to, policy- and decision-makers, and increasing public awareness of ethical issues that progress in science entails.
