2nd webinar in the series 'Thinking Africa in the time of the pandemic, healing from the COVID19 and its consequences on the continent, imagining Africa in the post-COVID19 world'

Dakar, June 17th 2020 - In the framework of its 'COVID19 Laboratories' initiative, the UNESCO Multisectoral Regional Office for West Africa-Sahel is organizing the second webinar in the series 'Thinking Africa in the time of the pandemic, healing from the COVID19 and its consequences on the continent, imagining Africa in the post-COVID19 world'.
The webinar’s theme will be: "Mobilizing Intellectuals in West and Central Africa", and will be held this Thursday, 18 June 2020 from 15:00 to 17:00 GMT. It and will be co-moderated by the Regional Director of UNESCO’s Office in Dakar, Mr. Dimitri Sanga and the Programme Specialist for Humanties and Social Sciences, Dr. Marèma Touré Thiam.
The opening remarks will be given by Mr Firmin Edouard Matoko, Assistant Director-General Africa Department at UNESCO, Pr Patrick Mouguiama Daouda, Minister of National Education, in charge of Civic Training, Coordinator of the UNITWIN Bantouphonie Network, in Libreville (Gabon) and Pr Mahamoudou FAMANTA, Minister of National Education, Higher Education and Scientific Research in Bamako (Mali).
The main objective of the online round table "Mobilizing the elites of West and Central Africa" is to pursue and deepen the African, multidisciplinary and prospective reflection on the impacts of the multidimensional crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic and explore the actions that need to be taken in order to make better decisions when it comes to public policies and practices, based on scientific evidence.
The aim will be to bring together, during the various sessions, African experts on topics such as economics, education, sociology and development, among other things, to contribute to rethinking post-COVID19 Africa.
For this specific webinar, discussions will revolve around the following three questions:
- What are the major impacts and challenges posed by the COVID-19 crisis for the present and future of the African continent?
- What are the major lessons to be learned from the pandemic and the avenues of reflection to be explored in depth while rethinking strategic choices and development models in Africa in order to accelerate the achievement of the 2030 and 2063 agendas?
- What can be the role and place of Humanities and Sciences in the reconstruction of post-COVID19 Africa?
The results of the Webinar will be an integral part of core analysis of the MOST research project "Scientific response to COVID-19" initiated by UNESCO’s Dakar Office.
