3rd Annual Youth STEM Boot Camp slated for Kigali, Rwanda
The third edition of the annual youth science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) boot camp, will be hosted at Creativity Lab in Kigali, Rwanda, from 28 February to 4 March 2022.
The main objective of the boot camp is to expose trainees to different instructional strategies using latest advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics as well as micro science kits, which have been minimally exploited in educational contexts in Africa. The training also seeks to equip the students and youths with hands-on experience on these different innovative technologies to enhance their confidence in the use of such tools.
This year’s event will be jointly organised by UNESCO in partnership with the Government of Rwanda, Ministry of Education (MINEDUC), Ministry of ICT & Innovation (MINICT), Rwanda National Commission for UNESCO (CNRU), Rwanda Basic Education Board (REB), Rwanda TVET Board (RTB), and the Creativity Lab.
This 3rd boot camp will run parallel to the 4th session of the African Regional Science, Technology and Innovation Forum and the 8th session of the Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development.
The boot camp is targeting 150 STEM instructors and students drawn from High and TVET schools in Kigali, Rwanda. The expected outcome is a practical appreciation of the potential applications of microscience kits, robotics and AI for STEM instruction and/or learning.
The practical approach to experiencing science using microscience kits is part of UNESCO’s Global Microscience Experiments Project that gives primary and secondary school pupils as well as university students the inclusive opportunity to conduct practical work in physics, mathematics, chemistry and biology.
