9 countries and cities kick off the implementation of UNESCO Culture|2030 Indicators

taken during kick-off workshops: Burkina Faso, Colombia, Viet Nam and Serbia

The UNESCO Thematic Indicators for Culture in the 2030 Agenda (UNESCO Culture|2030 Indicators) is a conceptual and methodological framework of thematic indicators whose purpose is to measure and monitor the progress of culture’s enabling contribution to the national and local implementation of the Goals and Targets of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The framework has been developed by UNESCO in collaboration with the UNESCO Institute for Statistics, with the aim to assess both culture’s role as a sector of activity, as well as the transversal contribution of culture across different SDGs and policy areas. In the period 2021-2022, 8 countries and cities implement the framework thanks to the support of the European Union, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID). UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe in collaboration with the UNESCO World Heritage Centre in Paris also foresees the implementation in 6 countries and 10 cities in Southeast Europe. These countries and cities have been particularly active between the end of 2021 and the beginning of 2022 to launch the implementation at national and local level.

Kick-off workshops have been organized in Burkina Faso, Colombia, Costa Rica, Morocco, the Philippines, Portugal, Romania, Serbia and Viet Nam.  The workshops achieved their objective of introducing the UNESCO Culture|2030 Indicators framework methodology, bringing together key stakeholders and professionals whose work is informed by culture and heritage. In this collaborative process, the groundwork for the upcoming data collection to measure the contribution of culture to sustainable development has started.
