Addressing the challenges faced by Women Scientists
13:00-13:45 in the Partnerships Hub (Halle Saxe)
For the past 30 years, UNESCO’s Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) has provided leadership in South to South capacity building programmes for women scientists, funded by two key donors in the North (Canada and Sweden). The session will explorer the perspectives of these and other key partners to the programme whose engagement with OWSD has to date enabled over 500 PhD Fellowships, more than 100 Early Career Fellowships, as well as awards, training programmes, visibility platforms, and a host of other South-South opportunities across more than 50 countries in the Global South. The session will also highlight how exceptional scientific institutes across lower and middle income countries have contributed to these results, as well as the fundamental contribution to the dissemination and uptake of these opportunities played by the extensive network of 52 OWSD National Chapters and over 9,600 members in lower and middle income countries. The session will also introduce a new programme in collaboration with UNHCR targeting displaced women scientists in national higher education systems which will be formally launched ,at the Global Refugee Forum in December 2023 with the first pilot focusing on displaced women scientists who hold refugee status in Jordan and who wish to pursue a Masters in STEM fields.
This session will be conducted in English.
