Advancing education leadership in the AI age: Holistic approaches to digital transformation in education
Rationale and background
The Digital Transformation Collaborative is hosting a technical workshop for focal points from Education and ICT ministries to engage in peer learning, multi-stakeholder design-thinking, and systems thinking training.
The Digital Transformation Collaborative (DTC) is a collaborative vehicle for advancing SDG 4 through digital transformation. A tech-focused subgroup of UNESCO's Global Education Coalition, the DTC supports governments to build sustainable and synergistic partnerships that drive digital transformation strategies for education that are impactful, equitable and well-integrated into countries’ overall plans for education transformation. Its contributors are experts in education and technology representing a range of public and private sector partners. Supported by a UNESCO secretariat, DTC members are committed to contributing to efforts to integrate digital technology into education in a coordinated, comprehensive, and country-led manner.
In September 2024 at the Summit of the Future, the international community came together to adopt the Global Digital Compact. The compact is an agreement involving all stakeholders – governments, the United Nations system, the private sector, civil society, grass-roots organizations, academia, and individuals – for an open, free and secure digital future. The DTC has turned this written agreement into practical resources and a co-created facility of expertise to support national education systems in their digital transformation journeys.
The DTC offers a unique set of tools, which includes a system-wide framework for the digital transformation of education, a holistic maturity assessment tool, and a resource pack of innovative financing models for digital solutions in education. With participation from leads of global initiatives in education technology, the DTC assists countries to make sense of the many international, regional and national programmes and resources that are available to them to support their progression along their unique digital transformation journey.
Structure of the day
Objective: Equip education government leaders with the knowledge and strategies to implement a holistic digital transformation plan that integrates all six pillars in the common framework to address national priorities and challenges effectively.
Output: Education leaders will leave the day with the tools to complete the DTC self-assessment questionnaire, a strengthened understanding of technical aspects of the Six Pillars Framework, and a new network of partners and government peer participants to continue to engage with through the DTC Capacity Development Course. DTC partners will leave the day with actionable feedback on the tools, learning content, and proposed course structure.
Focus: The workshop will focus on the ‘Connectivity and infrastructure’ and the ‘Data and evidence’ pillars of the common framework. These pillars of the framework are transversal and form the backbone of any digital transformation strategy.
Topics covered: Types of internet provision, financial models, devices and software, education data system architectures and management, and Artificial Intelligence competency frameworks for teachers and students.
