Brainstorm Workshop on Water Education for Rural Youth in Sudan

On the 17 April 2017, the Khartoum office of UNESCO in partnership with the Sudanese National Commission for Education, Science & Culture, the UNESCO Regional Center for Water Harvesting, the National Council for Literacy and Adult Education, the National Center for Curriculum and Education Research of the Ministry of Education, and the Drinking Water & Sanitation Unit of the Ministry of Water Resources organized a Brainstorm Workshop on Water Education for Rural Youth in Sudan. The workshop took place in the Electricity Distribution Company Hall, and included participation from the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Water Resources, Ministry of Environment, Sudanese Commission for Education, Science & Culture, UNESCO Network in Sudan, Academics, Researchers, Experts, representatives from the Sudan Youth Parliament for Water, in addition to participants from other National organizations.

The opening ceremony started with a welcome speech by Dr. Wafaa Seed Ahmed, the Acting Director for the Sudanese National Commission for Education, Science and Culture, where she linked the theme of workshop with the outlines of the International Hydrology Programme and the Sustainable Development Goal 6. Dr. Aiman Mohamed Badri, the Acting Representative of UNESCO to Sudan, underlined the fruitfulness of the long lasting relationship and partnership between UNESCO & Sudan. Mr. Hatim Ali Al-Badri, the General Director of the UNESCO Regional Center for Water Harvesting, referred to Sudanese Presidential Zero Thirst Program. Dr. Moawia Gashi, the Director of National Center for Curriculum and Education Research, spoke about the importance of water resources for Sudanese and the need to reshape perception of water resources in Sudan. Mr. Mohamed Hamad, the General Secretary of the National Council for Literacy and Adult Education, briefed the audience about the necessity of the development of Water Education Guidelines for rural and urban communities. Finally, Prof. Abdin Salih, the Representative of Sudan in the UNESCO Executive Board, closed the opening ceremony with a highlight on the importance to educate the Sudanese Youth and Children on the value of Water.

The Technical Session, started with a presentation by the Education Expert, Prof. Eltayeb Haiti on possible items enriching education curricula in directions of water valuing and efficient day-to-day usage, which was followed by a presentation by Dr. Amna Babiker on methodologies to teach youth and adults with a special attention to women.

Then the workshop participants distributed themselves among five groups to formulate and discuss recommendations in fields of: Simple Water Harvesting Schemes; Agriculture using Water Saving Plants; Water Quality and Sanitation; Water Conservation and Science, Technology and Innovation For Water Security. Afterwards representatives from groups briefed the audience of the workshop on their agreed recommendations, which were discussed carefully by all participants one more time.
