Call for Experts: Help Shape the Future of Ethical AI Education with UNESCO and LG AI Research

.
UNESCO LG MOOC

UNESCO is inviting AI ethics experts from around the world to take the lead in a global online course on the ethics of artificial intelligence (AI). If you're a researcher, educator, or practitioner working at the intersection of AI and ethics, this is your opportunity to contribute to a meaningful and high-impact learning initiative—and help build the future of ethical AI, one module at a time.

Call for Experts: Module Development for the Global MOOC on the Ethics of AI

About the MOOC: A Global Public Good in the Making

In response to the growing need for ethical, and context-sensitive AI systems, UNESCO and LG AI Research are jointly developing a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on the ethics of AI. This MOOC is grounded in the principles of the UNESCO Recommendations on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence—the first global normative framework on the subject, adopted by 193 Member States in 2021.

The MOOC is aimed at technologists, researchers, and policymakers who influence or shape the design, deployment, and regulation of AI systems.

Structured across three thematic tracks, the course will feature 10 modules, each exploring a distinct dimension of AI ethics:

  • Track 1: The Building Blocks – Foundations of ethical AI, including why ethics matter and how human-AI interactions shape system design.

  • Track 2: The Principles – In-depth coverage of key ethical principles such as transparency, fairness, privacy, accountability, sustainability, and proportionality.

  • Track 3: AI for the Public Good – Broader issues like AI governance, innovation, and democratization.

The course objectives are clear:

  • Build foundational knowledge of AI ethics

  • Encourage practical application through frameworks and real-world scenarios

  • Develop critical reasoning around ethical tradeoffs

  • Emphasize contextual sensitivity

  • Foster collaboration across disciplines and regions

How is the Project Team Structured?

The project is being steered by the Project Steering Committee (PSC), comprising of members from UNESCO Headquarters, UNESCO Regional Office for South Asia (New Delhi), and LG AI Research to oversee project governance, set priorities, and provide guidance throughout the project's lifecycle. In addition to the PSC, the project would also establish an International Advisory Group (IAG), comprising of subject matter experts and relevant stakeholders from across the world, to offer strategic guidance on the project, lend specialized insights, and support the project's implementation.

To ensure that each module is academically rigorous, globally relevant, and engaging for diverse audiences, UNESCO is inviting applications from qualified experts to lead the development of individual course modules.

Selected module leads will work with UNESCO and a dedicated instructional designer to bring complex ethical topics to life in digital form. This is a chance to not only share your expertise, but to help translate ethical theory into tools that technologists and policymakers around the world can use.

What will you do as a module lead?

  • Conceptualize and structure the full curriculum for one MOOC module

  • Deliver high-quality content, which may include recorded lectures or, annotated presentations

  • Work closely with UNESCO and the project’s instructional designer to ensure the material is pedagogically sound, learner-friendly, and aligned with digital delivery standards

  • Integrate feedback from UNESCO and the International Advisory Group (IAG) to refine and finalize the module content

Time Commitment and Honorarium

Module leads are expected to be available part-time between June and September 2025. The work is flexible and will be structured around milestone-based deliverables, virtual check-ins, and asynchronous collaboration.

For their contributions, each expert will receive an honorarium of USD 4000 per module, inclusive of all work related to content development, delivery, and revisions.
