Background and Project Description

The Rehabilitation and Development of the Great Zimbabwe World Heritage site project aims to improve the quality of life of the communities living around Great Zimbabwe National Monument through the diversification of the local economy; the promotion of income-generating and employment opportunities; and fostering social cohesion and a sense of belonging among vulnerable groups.

Under the overall coordination of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and with the support of the French Development Agency (AFD), UNESCO is partnering with the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe and other key stakeholders in the implementation of the project. The project is enhancing the conservation and management of the Great Zimbabwe National Monument World Heritage site in a sustainable manner. In its implementation, it is supporting the development of sustainable tourism practices, community-based cultural programming and tourism offers, thereby contributing to attaining the 2030 Agenda with its international sustainable development goals.

UNESCO and its partners commit to fostering sustainable development and community empowerment and invites expressions of interest from qualified non-governmental organizations or individuals to participate in the establishment of a Cultural Hub at the Great Zimbabwe National Monument World Heritage site and support its associated activities. This initiative aims to enhance and diversify the visitor experience at the site while promoting sustainable tourism activities led by the local community. 
 

Objectives:

The primary objective of this assignment is to establish a “Cultural Hub”, potentially at the Shona Village, where actions will be implemented to strengthen the creative entrepreneurial capacities of local community members with the aim of developing diversified and sustainable tourism activities at the Great Zimbabwe National Monument World Heritage site in synergy with surrounding areas. The assignment is aligned with the project’s Component 4 "Community-based and territorial level management solutions" and it specifically targets the sub-components that support the development of tourism offers, the development of updated crafts products, and the establishment of a cultural hub. 
 

Impact:

The successful implementation of this project is expected to contribute to the increased economic and social well-being of the community surrounding the Great Zimbabwe National Monument through sustainable tourism development. 
 

Outcome:

The anticipated outcome of this project is the enhanced and diversified visitor experience at the Great Zimbabwe National Monument through the establishment of a Cultural Hub and increased participation of local community members in sustainable tourism activities. 
 

Assignment:

Within the framework of the above context and under the overall authority of the Regional Director and Representative of UNESCO Southern Africa and the direct supervision of the Head of the Culture Unit, the qualified organizations or individuals shall:

 

1. Facilitate the establishment of the Great Zimbabwe Cultural Hub, potentially at the Shona Village.

a) Facilitate the refurbishment of existing facilities at the Shona Village and procurement of materials in order to accommodate the proposed activities.

b) Develop training programs on creative entrepreneurship for selected artists and creatives active in the local music, performing arts (dance, theatre), food, and visual arts (sculpture) scenes.

c) Conduct workshops and training sessions to enhance selected local artists and creatives’ skills in creative entrepreneurship.

d) Provide limited but sufficient seed funding to selected local artists and creatives to support kick-starting their cultural programming and the development of micro and small enterprises.

 

2. Update crafts and design production at the Nemanwa Crafts Centre.

a) Develop training programs for local artisans and community members on developing updated crafts and design products.

b) Conduct workshops and training sessions to enhance artistic and business skills.

c) Provide limited but sufficient seed funding to support the production and commercialization of updated craft and designs products by selected local artisans and community members.

 

3. Support the development of tourism offers at the Great Zimbabwe Destination.

a) Identify and engage selected micro, small and medium enterprises run by local community members to increase the variety of tourism experiences.

b) Provide limited but sufficient seed funding to enhance and expand tourism offers, including adventure tourism, cultural tourism, eco-tourism, and culinary tourism, provided by selected micro, small and medium enterprises run by local community members. 
 

Project Duration:

Activities are expected to complete over a period of eight (8) months from the date of signing a contract with UNESCO.

Budget:

Budget will be discussed based on the Financial and Technical proposal of the selected candidate.
