In Chengdu, Director-General Celebrates 10th Anniversary of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage
The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, is in Chengdu, China, from 14 to 15 June to take part in an International Conference on Intangible Cultural Heritage. The Conference is organized to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of UNESCO鈥檚 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The celebration will be marked by a high-level Conference exploring the Convention鈥檚 role, functioning and implementation modalities, while also looking forward to its future.
The aim is to identify new opportunities for safeguarding the world's intangible cultural heritage by revisiting the vision of the Convention鈥檚 founders, identifying achievements thus far and defining priorities for the future.
鈥淒edicated to ensuring that women and men, today and tomorrow, can enjoy the practices, expressions and knowledge of the past, the 2003 Convention is a powerful development tool to help build the future we want for all,鈥 said the Director-General in her opening message, highlighting the central place of culture in the global development agenda.
On the margins of the conference, the Director-General is expected to meet with the Minister of Culture of China, Cai Wu, and high government officials of the Sichuan Province and Chengdu City.
