With a broad mandate spanning education, culture, the sciences, and communication—and a presence across 46 National Commissions and three Associate Members—it is no surprise that even the UNESCO Regional Office in Bangkok’s closest partners sometimes ask: What exactly does the office do on a day-to-day basis?

The answer comes into focus in our newly released Snapshots 2024 report.

Set against the backdrop of the UN Summit of the Future and global frameworks like the Pact for the Future and Global Digital Compact, the report shows how UNESCO Bangkok 'supported countries across the region in turning these global commitments into tangible action,' writes Regional Director Soohyun Kim in her foreword. 'From fostering inclusive and ethical digital transformation to safeguarding cultural heritage and strengthening education systems, our initiatives in 2024 have helped shape policies, empower communities, and build regional momentum for sustainable development.'

Initiatives featured in the report include our work with Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand, and Viet Nam to launch the AI Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM); support for the education of 14,000 migrant children from Myanmar in Thailand; efforts to safeguard Indigenous knowledge systems, such as the tsunami early warning traditions of the Moken people; and actions to protect press freedom, including training judges, and prosecutors to recognize legal harassment of journalists.

The report also highlights UNESCO Bangkok’s role in the UN’s regional architecture for Asia and the Pacific, where it serves as co-chair of the Issue-Based Coalition on Digital Transformation, the Learning and Education 2030+ Networking Group, and the Oceans and Blue Economy Networking Group. Through these platforms, the office has helped drive regional collaboration, from advancing digital inclusion and education reform to bringing together 1,200 stakeholders from 40 countries to shape marine spatial planning and sustainable ocean management.
