The United Nations Organization (UN) designated 21 April as World Creativity and Innovation Day to raise greater awareness of the role of creativity and innovation to solve the problems affecting the economic, social and sustainable development of nations, especially the most pressing problems, such as the and .

Through on culture and sustainable development, the UN recognizes the contribution of culture as an enabler and driver of the economic, social and environmental dimension for sustainable development. The resolution urges Member States to intensify their efforts to put into practice specific measures aimed at strengthening the role of culture, as well its inclusion in social and economic development policies and strategies.   

Creativity and innovation have become the true wealth of nations, as stated in the joint , fruit of the collaborative effort of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (), the United Nations Development Programme  () and the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation ().

The report confirms the creative economy as one of the most rapidly growing sectors of the world economy and considers it a non-monetary value-generating force that contributes significantly to the achievement of inclusive and people-centred sustainable development.  

 

The adoption of the 2030 Agenda opened new pathways for incorporating culture into social and economic inclusion policies and environmental sustainability, with innovative solutions proposed by the States themselves, using the power of culture to imagine and conceive a more inclusive, just world, with greater equality.    

In this regard, the UNDP works to support the to this pandemic caused by the Coronavirus, from preparedness, response and recovery, with particular emphasis on the persons who are more vulnerable to this health, humanitarian and development crisis. In order to try new approaches and solutions to the problems generated by the crisis, the Accelerator Labs seek solutions resulting from the collective intelligence between UNDP, government, private sector, academe, civil society and local communities.

Likewise, in the framework of the response to the crisis, UNESCO facilitates to reflect on the impact and economic and social challenges of the health crisis in the culture sector and mobilize the commitment of authorities and the international community to seek viable solutions in assisting the cultural and creative industries and safeguarding the cultural and natural heritage of humanity.    

 

COVID-19 reveals that scientific cooperation is key in dealing with a global public health problem. It shows that the continuity of education should be guaranteed when at present there are so many boys, girls and youths unable to go to school. It recalls the power of culture and knowledge in strengthening the human fabric and solidarity, at a time when there are so many people across the world who should practice social distancing and stay home.

Today more than ever, this pandemic crisis shows us the importance of creativity and innovation on everybody’s part, men and women, in order to find different solutions to the socioeconomic problems we are facing. We must find new formulas that will enable us to emerge from this crisis, faster and stronger, building more resilient societies and without leaving anyone behind!
