CREFAL to host the Regional Steering Committee Meeting for Sustainable Development Goal 4
The work of the SDG 4 Regional Steering Committee, composed of 11 Member States, 9 regional organizations, and the Executive Secretariat, which is the Regional Bureau of Education for Latin America and the Caribbean (OREALC/UNESCO Santiago), is currently focusing on efforts towards educational recovery and transformation, in compliance with the ministerial mandate of the III Regional Meeting of Ministers of Education of Latin America and the Caribbean, held in Buenos Aires in May 2022. The Committee also accompanies countries in fulfilling the commitments established in the framework of the Transforming Education Summit (TES), held in September 2022 in New York, to prioritize education and accelerate the achievement of the SDG 4 targets of the 2030 Agenda.
The progress made by the region in education in recent decades has stagnated or regressed due to the catastrophic effects of COVID-19 and prolonged school closures. This situation has deepened the existing educational gaps that burden our region, compromising the guarantee of the right to education for an entire generation.
The meeting in Mexico will review the progress of regional educational cooperation and agree on the Committee's work plan for the period 2022-2025, which includes the holding of the next meeting of ministers of education, to be held in the city of Santiago, Chile, in the second half of this year.
