Digitalizing the Curaçao Education System through the Global Education Coalition

Willemstad/Curaçao- 9 March 2021. As part of the UNESCO Global Education Coalition to protect the right to education during the educational disruption caused by COVID-19, Curaçao, represented by its Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of Curaçao, hereinafter "MinESCS", and Microsoft signed a Memorandum of Understanding to support the island in its digitalization process of the education system.
Mr Steven Croes, Minister of MinESCS, signed the MOU on behalf of the Government of Curaçao on 9 March 2021 to achieve equal opportunities for all students in all schools by providing a modern personal e-learning environment for every student and a modern digital administrative environment for all schools.
The bilateral dialogue between Microsoft and the MinESCS was facilitated by UNESCO's Global Education Coalition (GEC), a platform for collaboration that enables connectivity to close the digital divide and ensure gender equality in the education system.
Within the framework of the GEC, the UNESCO Cluster Office for the Caribbean initiated consultations and bilateral dialogue between UNESCO member states in the Caribbean and Microsoft.
In order to identify needs, challenges and priorities for resource mobilisation with the Caribbean members of the Global Education Coalition, two consultations were held on 9 and 22 July 2020 with the thematic focus on empowering teachers in the digital domain, improving connectivity in the region to bridge the digital divide and ensuring gender equality in the Caribbean. This subsequently facilitated national and regional dialogue on potential partnerships with GEC partners, including this current partnership between Microsoft and the Ministry of Education of Curaçao.
