Director-General deplores the death of photographer Leïla Alaoui in Ouagadougou terror attack
The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, has condemned the terrorist attack in Ouagadougou, which claimed close to 30 lives, including that of French-Moroccan photographer Leïla Alaoui.
“I condemn the terrorist attack in Ouagadougou and present my heartfelt condolences to the families and relations of the victims of this violent extremism. The killing of Leïla Alaoui is a blow to all of us who uphold the humanist values UNESCO was established to promote,” said the Director-General.
“Ms Aloui’s work reflected a unique sensitivity and appreciation of our common humanity, transcending the barriers of culture, geography and gender, in favor of human rights and freedom of expression, respect and mutual understanding.”
Ms Alaoui was a 33-year-old French-Moroccan national. Focusing on the themes of cultural diversity, migration, human rights and the construction of identity, her work has been published in numerous newspapers and magazine and exhibited in the Arab region, Europe and the Americas.
