Disaster Risk Management and Cultural Heritage in the SICA Region

UNESCO, the World Bank, UNDRR and CECC-SICA renew their alliance to promote the inclusion of all aspects of cultural heritage in strategies for disaster risk management.

UNESCO was invited to participate in the event 鈥淭aller virtual y lanzamiento del reporte regional para Centroam茅rica y Rep. Dominicana鈥. This report is the result of a series of studies carried out by three SICA bodies: the Educational and Cultural Coordination (), the Coordination Center for the Prevention of Disasters in Central America and the Dominican Republic () and the Secretariat of Central American Tourism Integration (SITCA), thanks to the technical cooperation provided by the World Bank.

These organizations share UNESCO's interest in promoting the inclusion of all aspects of cultural heritage in disaster risk management strategies, both as elements that must be protected due to their cultural value and irreplaceable character, as well as in their quality of increasing the resilience and risk prevention capacity of communities. Cultural heritage, especially intangible, offers a series of key knowledge sets for the development of risk prevention strategies that take into account the interests, values 鈥嬧媋nd priorities of the communities involved

Representatives of these organizations, as well as the United Nations Office attended the virtual event for Disaster Risk Reduction for the Americas and the Caribbean. UNESCO was represented by Mrs. Esther Kuisch-Laroche, Director of the UNESCO Multi-Country Office in San Jos茅, and Mrs. Caroline Munier, Specialist for the Culture Program. It was an occasion to reaffirm alliances that were established during the Understanding Risk Central America (URCA) conference, which took place in February 2020.
