On the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the International Geoscience Programme (IGCP), the Earth Futures Festival was founded in collaboration with UNESCO under the International Geoscience Programme Project 685: Geology for Sustainable Development, and with the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS). The Earth Futures Festival is an international film and video festival that unites the arts and science to showcase how our scientific understanding and long-lived cultural knowledge of the Earth provide solutions to pressing global challenges.

About the festival

A staggering 972 films from 89 countries were submitted to the Earth Futures Festival 2022. Over several months these were assessed and carefully considered by a team of expert judges to select the top 50 films, consisting of 21 Finalist Films (nominated for category and theme awards) and 29 Official Selection Films. From poem, to dance, song and documentary, there is something for everyone to enjoy!

Each event takes on one of the 2022 Festival Themes of "Dynamic Earth", "Future Earth" and "Human Connection" and starts with the screening of selected festival films, followed by a dynamic discussion involving a diverse panel of geoscientists, filmmakers, and artists.

  • New York City Film Screening and Panel Discussion: Future Earth
  • Paris Film Screening and Panel Discussion: Human Connection
  • Sydney Film Screening and Panel Discussion: Dynamic Earth
