Senior Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS) officials from the Primary Education Department (PED), and development partners gathered from June 2 – 5, 2020 for a four-day consultative workshop to review the previous year’s in-service training (INSET) package in preparation for the upcoming academic year.

The workshop brought together 75 participants that included representatives from the MoEYS’s Teacher Training Department, the Curriculum Development Department and PED at the central level; partner Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO), Room to Read, RTI, World Education International and World Vision; Teacher Trainers from Phnom Penh Teacher Education College; and trainers from Provincial Teacher Training Centers (PTTCs) and select grade 1 and grade 2 teachers at the sub-national level.

It gave the participants an opportunity to share lessons from previous trainings on grade 1 Khmer Literacy Teaching and Learning Materials (TLM) Package and this year’s training on grade 2 Khmer Literacy TLM, and brainstorm ideas on how to adapt and improve them for the upcoming academic year, especially following the COVID-19 pandemic.

His Excellency Chan Sophea, Director of Primary Education Department, reflected that reviewing the Khmer Literacy Teaching and Learning Package after pilot and implementation is crucial in order for the MoEYS and development partners to further improve it. He also stressed that the revised teacher and student books are user-friendly, inclusive, and reflective of students’ daily life.

In his closing remarks, His Excellency Dr. Hang Chuon Naron, the Minister of MoEYS, stated that the Early Grade Khmer Literacy Teaching and Learning Package is a great achievement of MoEYS in its education reforms. He acknowledged the effort of MoEYS and PED leadership, and the support from development partners to make this reading improvement package possible. He emphasized that when students are good at Early Grade Reading, they are more likely to succeed in the next grades.

The development, improvement and roll-out of an improved Early Grade Teaching and Learning Package is a key part of (STEPCam) that in partnership with the MoEYS and the USAID-funded All Children Reading Cambodia Initiative aims to improve the quality of teaching and learning in the early grades. STEPCam is funded through the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) and UNESCO Capacity Development for Education Program (CapED).
