Sawa Language and Culture School, Cameroon

Bugdet: $11 million

Duration project:

Location: Cameroon

The COVID-19 pandemic hit harder on many communities in Cameroon already experiencing multi-facet crisis which discontinued or threatened the continuity of education in some regions of the country. In the peak of the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic which forced the hibernation of schools under the lockdown measures, the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) project was rolled out with the aim to ensure the continuity of basic education for public school students affected by the COVID-19 crisis.

UNESCO rolled out a plan for the reopening of schools and the organization of classes in a safe and protective sanitary environment and strengthen the resilience of the education system to crises. The project is part of the implementation of the GPE's US$11 million grant to Cameroon to support the implementation of the National Response Plan against the impact of COVID-19 in the education and vocational training sector.

Highlight: To ensure the continuity of education for communities affected by COVID-19 and related crisis which forced children to stay out of school, UNESCO supported 55 community radios in the 10 regions of the national territory with distance learning “my radio school” materials and financial support for the production and broadcasting of educative resources.
