Ending school violence and bullying in schools

Bullying has a significant negative effect on children鈥檚 mental health, quality of life and academic achievement. Children who are frequently bullied are nearly three times more likely to feel like an outsider at school and more than twice as likely to miss school as those who are not frequently bullied.

UNESCO New Delhi鈥檚 recent study 鈥溾 highlights different forms of bullying varying according to grade levels 鈥 primary, middle/high school or higher secondary. Physical bullying was reported high among middle/high school (60) and higher secondary (50%) students while sexual bullying was reported high when the participants were primary school students (43%).
Ensuring all children and young people have access to safe, inclusive, health-promoting learning environments is a strategic priority for UNESCO. The organization works towards eliminating school violence and bullying including school-related gender-based violence and preventing health and gender-related discrimination towards learners and educators. Moreover, UNESCO contributes to the measuring of progress towards Target 4.a of Sustainable Development Goal 4 on Quality Education, which focuses on the provision of safe and non-violent learning environments for all children and adolescents.
