Ending Violence against Women and Girls: the Workshop in Khartoum

On 8th March 2016, in a context of the International Women鈥檚 Day, a workshop 鈥Making the Awareness of Rule of Law and Human Rights work for Women鈥 took place in Khartoum. The workshop was organized by the country office of UNDP, the Khartoum office of UNESCO and the Ministry of Justice in cooperation with the Ahfad University for Women and UN Women. The objective of the workshop was to give to the Sudanese practitioners, policy makers and experts an opportunity to discuss the impediments to women鈥檚 access to justice and how they can be overcome. Expected results of the discussion were:

  1. Identifying activities that still needs to be done to make next steps towards true gender equality, and women empowerment
  2. Identifying case stories about defending women鈥檚 rights 鈥 reflecting the best Sudanese practices
  3. Identifying gaps between visions of legal offices and female activists on the EVAWG (the domain of activities around the idea 鈥淓nding Violence against Women and Girls鈥) in Sudan

More than 30 participants including practitioners from Darfur鈥檚 and Eastern states discussed the items of the agenda. 4 papers were presented about different aspects of EVAWG and the existing infrastructure of justice in the area. Resulting the discussions the participants expressed the need in some specialized forum for the communication of the EVAWG practitioners 鈥 making it regular and expanding it to the state and local levels.

The workshop was honored by H.E. Ms. Tahani Tour El-Daba, the State Minister of Justice, and by Dr. Pavel Kroupkine, the UNESCO Representative to Sudan. .
