Transforming MENtalities: Engaging men & and boys: a report on pathways to gender equality in India
The quest for gender equality has seen progress, yet gender-based discrimination and violence persist in various forms around the world. This situation calls for urgent action, that involve everyone – especially men and boys. Their role in challenging harmful masculinities and supporting gender equality is crucial to building inclusive, peaceful and equitable societies, but also for their own well-being. Working with men is crucial because they, too, are shaped by the same norms, biases and prejudices that often deny women their rights and dignity.
What works to engage men and boys to address gender inequality? This report seeks to answer this question for development professionals and civil society organizations aspiring to work on masculinities.
The ten case studies from across India featured in this report illustrate that inclusive practices can lead to more equitable communities. The findings highlight collaboration among stakeholders, adopting an intersectional approach, leveraging entry points that men can relate to, and running multisectoral, intersectional and long-term programmes.
This report also notes challenges, like assessments of the long-term impact of programmes and backlash to them. Recommendations include early education on gender issues, the creation of safe dialogue spaces for men and boys, and active engagement with policy-makers to institutionalize gender-equity practices, empowering local leadership, and building the capacity of grassroots stakeholders.
