Expert Meeting on Water Harvesting and Ground Water Recharge in Khartoum, Sudan
On the 10-11 of December 2016 the Khartoum office of UNESCO and the Regional Center for Water Harvesting (RCWH, the UNESCO Category 2 Center) in collaboration with the Ministry of Water Resources, Irrigation and Electricity (MoWRIE), National Commission for Education, Science and Culture and other national partners organized the expert meeting on Water Harvesting and Groundwater Recharge, which took place in Khartoum, Corinthia Hotel. Water experts and practitioners from Sudan, Egypt, Japan, Tunisia, Serbia met and discussed the water harvesting and ground water issues of Sudan, contributing to the knowledge growth and exchange in frameworks of the International Hydrology Programme (IHP) of UNESCO, MoWRIE and RCWH.

The opening session of the Expert Meeting was chaired by Dr. Ahmed Eltayeb, the General Director of National Water Research Center, and included speeches of H.E. Eng. Khidir Gism Elseed, the State Minister of MoWRIE and Director of Dams Implementation Unit, H.E. Dr. Pavel Kroupkine, the Head of the Khartoum office and UNESCO Representative to Sudan, H.E. Prof. Abdin Salih, the Member of the UNESCO’s Executive Board, Dr. Abdulgadir Mohamed Nurreddin, the General Secretary of the National Commission for Education, Science and Culture, Prof. Ali Rabah, Chairman of Water Research Center and Dean of Faculty of Engineering in the University of Khartoum, and Eng. Hatim Elbadri, the Director of UNESCO’s Regional Center for Water Harvesting.
The participants presented their results in research and experience for the following discussion in Water Harvesting and Ground Water Harvesting from Sudan, Egypt, Tunisia, Serbia and Japan. An international aspect of the problem was underlined by Dr. Bisher Imam, the Senior Water Science Specialist in the Cairo Office of UNESCO, who presented UNESCO’s IHP and Water Sciences activities in the Arab Region, and promoted opportunities for national, regional and international collaborations on water issues between the academics and practitioners from different countries.

The Expert Meeting concluded highlighting the necessity of:
· Multidisciplinary researches on Water Harvesting and Ground Water Recharge
· Knowledge sharing for Water Harvesting on national, regional and international levels
· High-level education and training on Water Harvesting and Ground Water Recharge
· Reliable data collection, monitoring, analysis and computer modelling in Water Harvesting and Ground Water Recharge in Sudan
· More researches on Economics of Water Harvesting and value of water obtained
· More researches on sustainability and efficiency of Water Harvesting and Groundwater Recharge in Sudan
· Developing Manuals / Guidelines / Policies / Laws / Specifications to control Water Harvesting and Groundwater Recharge related activities in Sudan
