General Assembly of the African Network of Biosphere Reserves in Ghana

The Man and Biosphere (MAB) Programme and the UNESCO Accra Office in collaboration with the Ghana National Commission for UNESCO are organizing the General Assembly 2013 and the Regional Meeting of the African Network of Biosphere Reserves (AfriMAB) in Accra, Ghana, from 24鈥27 September 2013.

AfriMAB is the Africa sub-Saharan network of Biosphere Reserves. As of June 2013, there are fifty-nine Biosphere reserves in Africa.

The official opening ceremony of the AfriMAB General Assembly took place on 24 September 2013 with key speakers including Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman, Minister for Education, and Hon. Dr. Paul Joe Oteng-Adjei, Minister for the Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI).

The theme of the meeting is 鈥楾he Role of Ecosystems Services in Boosting Green Economies in Biosphere Reserve鈥. It will provide a platform for participants to exchange information on harnessing ecosystems services to develop green economies in biosphere reserves. Participants will also be able to undertake a regional stock-taking, help redefine the orientation of the network鈥檚 programme for the biennium, and share information and skills in biosphere reserve management through direct field visits.
