Ibero-America agrees to create an international platform of cooperation to confront the COVID on sports

During the first Conference of Ministers and High Authorities of Sports in times of COVID-19, more than 20 European and American countries agreed upon the establishment of this initiative

On Friday, 22 of May, the first virtual conference of Iberoamerican Ministers and High Authorities of Sports was held, where more than 20 States from Europe and America participated, organized by the Ibero-American Council of Sports (CID), UNESCO and the General Secretariat of Ibero-America (SEGIB).

鈥淭his moment we are living - said Lidia Brito, Director of the UNESCO Regional Office for Science in Latin America and the Caribbean, during the installation - invites us to promote cooperation and joint action. To work as a team, a very well-known concept in sports鈥, she encouraged.

During the event, the countries of the region shared various actions that are being implemented within the framework of the COVID-19 sanitary crisis. Various strategies were agreed upon, such as the design of protocols for resuming sports activities, the encouragement of physical exercise while respecting social distancing, and the support of vulnerable families in the sports sector which have been particularly affected during the pandemic.

"The main idea is to initiate and support joint cooperation between the countries of Ibero-America. In order to achieve this, during the Conference it was agreed upon launching a platform made up of all those actions implementend by governments and the sports communities aimed at reactivating sports in Ibero-America,鈥 explained Andr茅s Morales, Specialist in the Social and Human Sciences sector at the Regional Office for Science in Latin America and the Caribbean from UNESCO.

In addition to the High Authorities of Sports, international organizations such as the Council of Europe, UN Women and GIZ, and sports institutions such as LaLiga, Sports & Human Rights, and WADA also participated in the conference.

During the meeting, the countries agreed to follow up on this first ministerial meeting, and made a collective commitment to hold a second meeting in the upcoming months.
